Notice for Admission to PhD Program: 2024-25 (Winter Session)

Online applications are invited from Indian citizens for admission to the Ph.D. program scheduled to commence from January 2025 in the following schools of NISER, Bhubaneswar:

  • School of Biological Sciences (SBS)
  • School of Chemical Sciences (SCS)
  • School of Computer Sciences (SCoS)
  • School of Earth & Planetary Sciences (SEPS)
  • School of Physical Sciences (SPS)

1. Eligibility

School of Chemical Sciences

  • 55% or equivalent GPA in Master’s in Chemistry or allied Chemistry fields. Students with Master’s degree in any branches of Basic Sciences with undergraduate degree in Chemistry (or Chemistry as one of the subjects) or M.Tech in applied Chemistry or Computer Sciences with interest in pursuing a career in Chemistry are also encouraged to apply. Candidates with a 4-year / 8-semester Bachelor’s degree program with chemistry as major subject with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade are also eligible to apply for the program

2. Requirement of Qualifying in National Level Examinations for Pursuing Ph.D. Program

School of Chemical Sciences:

  • Candidates should have qualified at least one of these National Level Examinations i.e. CSIR-UGC NET/ GATE valid for the academic year August 2024-July 2025

Important Note:

  • (a) The cut-off marks for national examinations such as GATE/JEST/JGEEBILS/CSIR-UGC-NET will be decided by each School for the relevant subject area.
  • (b) Students with INSPIRE Doctoral Fellowship ONLY, without qualifying for any of the above-mentioned national-level exams, will NOT be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program at NISER.
  • (c) Candidates with GPA/CGPA in their qualifying degree must provide documentation from their University/Institute detailing conversion into percentage if not listed on their mark sheet.

3. Fellowship

  • ₹37,000/- as Junior Research Fellowship for the first two years, and subsequently ₹42,000/- for a maximum period up to another three years as Senior Research Fellowship, subject to fulfilling all academic requirements set by the Institute.
  • Students with external fellowships from agencies such as CSIR, UGC, etc., are eligible to draw fellowships as per the rules of the respective funding agencies and will NOT be eligible for NISER/DAE fellowship.

School of Biological Sciences:

  • Molecular mechanism of eukaryotic translation initiation
  • Mechanism of membrane remodelling and its role in organelle biogenesis
  • Neuronal membrane remodelling and deformation by amyloidogenic protein cross-talk
  • Mechanistic studies on anti-cancer lead compounds
  • Molecular genetics and epigenetics of aging disorders: Neurodegeneration and Cancer
  • Intercellular exchanges and signaling events in gastric cancer
  • Molecular Medical Microbiology: Understanding persistence in bacteria and the role of membrane proteins in antimicrobial resistance and stress
  • Plant development mechanisms in response to climate change
  • Bacterial divisome and plasmid segregation complexes

4. Selection Procedure

  • The selection committee of the respective schools will shortlist candidates from the applications received by the deadline. Merely satisfying the minimum qualifications does not guarantee shortlisting. The schools may set additional criteria as deemed necessary.
  • Short-listed candidates will be called for an interview, supplemented by a written test, if necessary, for admission.
  • Based on the academic record and candidates’ performance in the selection process, the selection committee will recommend candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program.

5. How to Apply

  • Applicants must apply online at http://www.niser.ac.in, following the stepwise instructions mentioned to complete the application submission process. Successful submission of the online application is entirely the candidate’s responsibility. NISER will not bear liability for incomplete applications or the non-submission of any required supporting documents.
  • Candidates intending to apply for more than one school must fill up separate online application forms for each school with appropriate supporting documents.
  • NISER does not charge any application fee for Ph.D. program applications.

6. Important Dates

  • Online application portal activation – 23rd October 2024
  • Last date for filling up the online application – 14th November 2024
  • Short-listed candidates list upload date – 19th November 2024

  2. School of Chemical Sciences: 16 December 2024
  3. School of Computer Sciences: 09 –10 December 2024
  4. School of Earth & Planetary Sciences: 05 – 06 December 2024
  5. School of Physical Sciences: 12 – 13 December 2024

  • Ph.D. first semester registration is scheduled for 03rd January 2025, with classes commencing on 6th January 2025.

Checklist for Application Submission

During online submission, have the following ready for uploading:

  • JPEG file of your passport-size photo
  • JPEG file of your valid signatures
  • Birth Certificate or 10th pass certificate for date of birth
  • Category certificate (SC/ST), if applicable
  • Certificate and mark sheets supporting the passing of the qualifying examination, i.e., Master’s degree OR 4 Years / 8 Semester Bachelor’s degree, as applicable. If the original pass certificate is not issued, a provisional certificate from the University/college certifying degree completion should be submitted.
  • Certificate/document supporting qualifying national level examination(s), such as CSIR-UGC NET JRF/DBT-BET JRF/JEST/NBHM/GATE, or any other as applicable.
