We are looking to hire a Lead:Physical Chemistry Modeller in our Digital R&D Team based in Bangalore:

To meet the sustainable business growth challenges of the next decade, Unilever R&D aims to transform its approach to scientific discovery and product development through a Digital Transformation program. The Digital R&D team is leading this transformation through advanced applications involving modelling and analytics to drive speed, efficiency, and connectivity. This requires continuous growth of leading-edge machine learning, modelling, simulation, statistics & data science expertise.

The Modelling & Analytics team for product formulation, process engineering and packaging is part of the cross Unilever Digital & Partnerships Group.  We exploit leading edge modelling and simulation expertise to support products and brands across all Unilever’s business groups in Nutrition, Ice Cream, Beauty and Wellbeing, Personal Care and Home Care. The team creates modelling solutions for the scale up of manufacturing processes, packaging and to deliver functionally superior formulations to design sustainable, superior and scalable products and processes with increased speed to market and lower costs.  The three key tasks of the team are (a) provide leading edge modelling solutions, (b) define and internalise long-term science related modelling solutions to the benefit of Unilever. (c) act to foster, train and enhance modelling skills and solution across R&D.

JOB PURPOSE

The strategic aim of the Digital and Partnership group is to help contribute to the ongoing digital transformation of Unilever via provision of advanced training, enabling systems and modelling tools to drive R&D speed, efficiency and connectivity. In this regard the Modelling and Analytics team has the responsibility to develop and deliver leading edge modelling, simulation, machine learning, statistics and data science expertise and tools. This role will focus on the range of physical science, informatics and soft matter modelling to support our R&D and help it translate directly to the business.

The ideal candidate will bring their core skills and a desire to adapt and learn.  A strong background in applied chemistry is required but with a strong supporting set of skills in modelling (computing) and analytics.  Your chemistry skills should include physical chemistry, thermodynamics, solution state chemistry – soft matter would also be an advantage.  Your modelling experience can be from a range of disciplines including applied math (solution equilibria, soft matter), molecular modelling, informatics, machine learning or statistics.  The focus will be to provide leading edge mechanistic and data driven insights into ingredient chemistry and formulation physics along with the behaviours of these formulations in real use situations. Work is interdisciplinary, global, highly networked through project activities with our business groups and our external network of science partner universities. The products and brands we support span all Unilever Business Groups: Home Care, Beauty & Wellness, Personal Care, Ice Cream and Nutrition.

We are looking for a creative and entrepreneurial chemistry-based modeler who wants to help us to deliver in both our immediate and long-term ambitions. Responsibilities

  • Grow and apply your skills by engaging in one or more areas of modelling and apply to Unilever physical science domains using and learning to combine expertise in any one of informatics, machine learning methods or soft matter modelling / simulation.
  • Play a leadership role for the Bangalore based members of the Modelling and Analytics team working with the UK based Global Head to grow the standing and credibility of the team, represent the team in site activities and forums and to support the professional development of the Bangalore based team.
  • Help develop and eventually lead the modelling strategy for physical chemistry, thermodynamics, soft matter physics and solution state chemistry themes
  • Help co-ordinate selected external modelling activities, translate, steer direction and act to support most effective dissemination of outcomes and actions.
  • Work in partnership with Program Leaders to formulate applied research, articulate milestones and deliver them on time.
  • Embrace the global way of working across Unilever R&D sites, promoting global mindset and collaboration.
  • Promote the internal dissemination of results and ideas and bank them through reporting, external publication and IP opportunities arising.
  • Support democratization of models and ensure the right models are developed to work in practice (suitable for our fast-paced environment).

  • A BSc or higher degree or equivalent in Physical Chemistry / Materials Chemistry with a demonstrated understanding in any physical science related modelling using informatics, machine learning, or soft matter molecular simulation.
  • A desire to learn and apply your newfound skills and knowledge to exciting challenges will be supported by the Global Head of Modelling and Analytics to allow you to gradually take on more responsibility
  • Track record of delivery.
  • The ability to work effectively across multiple sites and functions.

    • Answer: I have experience in managing outsourced services, including training and auditing, to ensure quality and compliance in analytical testing. This includes selecting and evaluating external laboratories, conducting audits to assess their capabilities, and providing necessary training to align their practices with our requirements. I am familiar with lab auditing systems and have implemented measures to maintain accurate and reliable analytical results.
  4. How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in analytical techniques and instrumentation?
    • Answer: I believe in continuous learning and staying updated with the latest advancements in analytical techniques and instrumentation. I regularly attend industry conferences, seminars, and workshops to enhance my knowledge. Additionally, I actively follow scientific literature and journals to keep abreast of new methodologies, technologies, and applications in analytical chemistry.
  5. Can you provide an example of a challenging project or problem you encountered in your previous role and how you resolved it using your analytical skills?
    • Answer: In a previous project, we faced difficulties in analyzing a complex mixture of compounds in a home care product. Using my analytical skills and expertise, I employed a combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques to separate and identify the individual components. Through method optimization and data analysis, I successfully resolved the complexity and provided valuable insights for product improvement.
